Martyrs have a special status in every religion. They are "heroes" who give their lives for their ideals. Their death acquires a symbolic meaning and its own story within their own religious tradition. There is no fixed definition of 'the' martyr, in every time and situation people give it its own meaning. However, the death of the martyr is always shocking and creates a deep duality. In Dan liever dood!, experts address how we deal with martyrdom in the traditions of the five major world religions. What is meant by ""martyrdom"" in Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism? And in the secular world? Where does this talk of 'martyrs' come from, and how is their martyrdom valued?

This volume develops new conceptual and theoretical directions in the study of religion, conflict, and violence through a sharp focus on materiality, drawing upon two previously unrelated fields of scholarship: research on religion and conflict and the material turn within religious studies. How do objects become contested in settings characterized by (violent) conflict? Why are some things contested by religious actors? How do religious actors mobilize things in conflict situations and how are conflict and violence experienced by religious groups? This volume explores relations between materiality, religion, and violence by drawing upon two fields of scholarship that have rarely engaged with one another: research on religion and (violent) conflict and the material turn within religious studies. This way, this volume sets the stage for the development of new conceptual and methodological directions in the study of religion-related violent conflict that takes materiality seriously.

In Religions and Trade a number of international scholars investigate the ways in which eastern and western religions were formed and transformed from the perspective of “trade.” Trade changes religions. Religions expand through the help of trade infrastructures, and religions extend and enrich the trade relations with cultural and religious “commodities” which they contribute to the “market place” of human culture and religion. This leads to the inclusion, demarcation and densification as well as the amalgamation of religious traditions. In an attempt to find new pathways into the world of religious dynamics, this collection of essays focuses on four elements or “commodities” of religious interchange: topologies of religious space, religious symbol systems, religious knowledge, and religious-ethical ways of life.

This resource provides six articles noting current directions in religious education research. The field of religious education can be very broad and is capable of addressing a wide range of issues. This resource looks at six specific cases. First, a new educational tool that allows students to self-reflect on their religious and worldview journey is presented. A second contribution looks at a quantitative study of how adolescents view religion in Spain, utilizing analytical, empirical and social research methods. A critical component that is studied in this context is gender. The third article presents a creative look at how the Tauhidic elements in Islamic religious education can contribute to understanding the environmental challenges we face, looking at how we can be encouraged to take appropriate action to resolve our ecological problems. The fourth article looks at the suitability of religious education in a post-pandemic world in developing discussions on values, and how students can make sense of which values are right for them within the range of competing values. The fifth article also looks at life in a post-pandemic world. As thousands of families and individuals have experienced first-hand the pain of long-term illness and loss, understanding trauma-informed pedagogies can be extremely valuable. The sixth and final contribution looks at the value of using digital stories to foster global interreligious understanding, as well as deeper theological and spiritual understanding, especially in a world that is saturated with media and devices. Overall, the articles reflect a range of perspectives and research interests in the field of religious education.
